About the Boise Trails Challenge

Who is the Challenge Open To?

The Challenge is open to mountain bikers, hikers, and trail runners. If you sign up for the “bike” class, you can complete the required trails by foot or by bike, in any combination that you want. If you sign up for the “on foot” category, only your on-foot activities will count.

How Do I Sign Up?

First, if you have an account from prior years, login using the Sign Up/Log-in button in the menu at the top right of this page. If you don't have an account, create one using the same button. After you enter your e-mail and create a password, you'll be required to validate your e-mail address to make sure we can communicate with you during the Challenge. Pay the registration fee ($60 before June 1, $65 until June 18, and $70 after that). Next, download the Boise Trails Challenge app from the Apple App Store or the Google Play Store and log into the app using your account info created in the prior step. Boom, you’re all set!

How Does it Work?

You must record all your relevant activities on the Boise Trails Challenge app, or upload them to your Boise Trails Challenge profile from another GPS device (recording them directly through the app is strongly encouraged). This website will pull in all your relevant activities and mark off trails as you complete them. Your challenge progress will be visible to you and to the public.

What Happened to Strava?

In past years, we pulled activity data from Strava. That's not the case anymore--Strava changed their terms and now you'll record your activities directly in the Boise Trails Challenge app. You can also upload activities to the website from a GPS device, but that will require more steps--we strongly encourage you to take your phone on the trail and upload through the app. If you have questions about the new process, please watch this short video about how to upload activities without Strava.

Sounds Cool. How Do I Complete the Challenge?

You complete the Boise Trails Challenge by completing every trail in the Challenge during the Challenge timeframe (one month). We will measure your completion time by the time stamp on your Strava activity. The Challenge begins at 12:00:01 a.m. on Thursday June 18, 2026 and ends at 11:59:59 p.m. on July 18, 2026.

You can complete the trails in any order, and you don’t have to do an entire trail all at once—most of the trails are broken up into segments, and you can complete each trail segment-by-segment for more natural loops and routes. You must do a segment in a single activity to get credit for that segment—you can’t do part of a segment one day and then come back for the rest.

It’s your responsibility to make sure your phone or GPS unit is charged, that you don’t accidentally erase your activity, etc.

I’m Competitive and Like to Beat Other People at Things. How Do I WIN the Challenge?

You win by being the first person of your gender, in your category (foot, bike, etc.) to complete all the trails in the Challenge. Completion time will be measured by the time stamp on the GPS file (not the upload time).

What Are the Rules?

The objective is simple: complete every trail in the Challenge during the month. In the “bike/foot” category, you can do this by bike or by foot, or a combination of the two. Alternatively, you can sign up for the “foot only” category, in which only on-foot activities will be counted. If you complete the whole thing by foot, you’re a friggin’ rockstar. No motorcycles, e-bikes, or horses, sorry. To prevent the Challenge from simply going to the most prolific shuttlers, certain trails must be climbed. These are noted on the trail map.

What are the Prizes?

We're still sourcing some of the prizes. But rest assured they're going to be cool! All finishers will get a Boise Trails Challenge finisher cup. All participants will get Boise Trails socks, patch and swag. There will be a bunch of rad "scavenger hunt" types of prizes, like gift cards and outdoor gear.

Why Am I Not Getting Emails About the Challenge?

For some reason Microsoft email accounts (MSN, Outlook, Hotmail) block our emails. Please add "help@boisetrails.com" and "kirk@boisetrails.com" to the trusted sender list in your email account.

How Do I Pick Up My Stuff?

You can pick up your participant packet (socks, sticker and other swag) at the pick-up party from 6-8 pm on Wednesday June 17 at Payette Brewing Co (733 S. Pioneer St.) If you can't make it, send a friend to get your packet for you.

Who was Jason Delgadillo?

Jason was my co-founder at BoiseTrails.com. In the summer of 2017, Jason heard that some friends were trying to ride every trail on the Ridge to Rivers map in one month. Always up for a challenging adventure, Jason joined in on the fun. Then he realized it would be way cooler if we could hook in our GPS tracks automatically—no more spreadsheets to track our progress! He talked to some of his brilliant, tech-savvy friends, and the Boise Trails Challenge was born.

Tragically, Jason passed away while mountain biking on May 12, 2018. You can learn more about that here.

Jason was a passionate advocate for Boise’s trails, and a friend to everyone on the trails. This Challenge is held in Jason’s honor.

Where Does the Money From Signups Go?

In the past three years we've given over $50,000 to local trail organizations and land stewards. The money from BTC goes to purchase prizes; pay for permits from the City of Boise, Bureau of Land Management and Forest Service; build, host and maintain the software; pay for insurance; compensate the Boise Trails team for their time; add features for future years; and fund the parties. In addition to the permitting fees, Boise Trails donates a portion of the event proceeds to Ridge to Rivers and SWIMBA to reinvest in the trails.

That’s about it. If you have additional questions or think we forgot something, feel free to email us at help@boisetrails.com
